NRA Refuse to be a Victim: 4 hours ($20). A non firearm class.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, millions of citizens are victimized annually by personal theft, violent, and property crimes. You do not have to be a statistic. You can choose to refuse to be a victim!
The Refuse To Be A VictimŽ seminar promotes awareness and prevention of criminal confrontation. Seminar topics include: home, automobile, phone, technological, travel, and personal security. Seminar participants are presented with a variety of common-sense crime prevention and personal safety strategies and devices they may integrate into their daily lives.
Safety experts agree the single most important step toward ensuring your personal safety is making the conscious decision to refuse to be a victim. You stand a much better chance of preventing criminal attack if you develop a safety plan before you need it.
The seminar teaches easy to understand methods you can use to increase awareness and prevent criminal confrontation. In just three to four hours, you will get the tools you need to develop your own personal safety strategy, including information about:

- Automobile & Travel Security
- Personal & Technological Security
- Self Defense Devices and Training Options

Wilderness First Aid Course: 8-10 hours ($100). A non firearm class.
An ideal course for those who are involved in wilderness recreation. This course may also meet the needs of volunteers and professionals who lead groups on short trips in relatively low risk situations. Topics include: patient assessment, preventing and caring for injuries, environmental hazards, caring for specific injuries, biologic hazards, medical problems and evacuation. The class is taught by experienced paramedics and wilderness instructors.
Offered in cooperation with Midwest Safety Associates.
NRA Basic Firearm Courses
No FOID Card Required - No Experience Necessary!
Class size is limited to 10 participants.
Attractive certificates are awarded to participants who successfully complete each basic course.
- Home Firearm Safety: 4 hours ($55/$30/$15).
This course teaches basic knowledge and skills and explains the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of guns within the home. Anyone, especially a non-shooter, living in a home where firearms are kept should take this course.
Using the NRA training method of Total Participant Involvement, the Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun basic courses provide hands on learning opportunities in the following areas:
- Basic firearms safety instruction
- Basic marksmanship instruction
- Safe firearm handling
- Firearm parts and operation
- Ammunition and its function
- Shooting fundamentals and an opportunity to develop them on the range
- How to select, clean and store a firearm
- Review of various activities available to help participants develop and improve their shooting skills
When you've finished your course, not only will you have learned the basics, you will be on your way to pursuing a lifetime of shooting.

- Basic Pistol: 10 hours [two sessions: Friday 6pm - 10pm and Saturday 9am - 3pm] ($125/$100/$30).
This course teaches basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely. During the course the student will spend around two hours on the range learning basic marksmanship employing the fundamentals of pistol shooting utilizing a .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol firing approximately 100 rounds of ammunition.
- Basic Rifle: 14 hours [two sessions: Friday 6pm - 10pm and Saturday 8am - 6pm] ($125/$100/$30).
This course teaches basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for owning and using a rifle safely. During the course the student will spend around two hours on the range learning basic marksmanship employing the fundamentals of rifle shooting utilizing a .22 caliber bolt action rifle firing approximately 100 rounds of ammunition.
- Basic Shotgun: 10 hours [two sessions: Friday 6pm - 10pm and Saturday 9am - 3pm] ($125/$100/$30).
This course teaches basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for owning and using a shotgun safely. During the course the student will spend around two hours on the range learning basic marksmanship employing the fundamentals of shotgun shooting utilizing a 20 gauge semi-automatic shotgun firing approximately 75 rounds of ammunition.
NRA's FIRST STEPS Program
FIRST (Firearm Instruction, Responsibility and Safety Training) STEPS is the latest addition to the NRA's training programs for new shooters, it is ideal for the novice shooter. It provides hands-on orientation to one specific rifle, pistol or shotgun model in as little as four hours, including a one-hour shooting session on a range and teach only the most basic shooting skills, they are not complete "courses" in the traditional sense of the word
The goal of this program is teach the participant the FUNDAMENTALS of Firearm Safety and Shooting. These skills require additional and regular practice.

No Experience Necessary! These classes are scheduled when requested. This is individual one-on-one instruction on one specific firearm supplied by the student.
A firearm in good working condition (we require that it pass a safety inspection) with a minimum 100 rounds of ammunition must be supplied by the student. These classes are limited to instruction on one specific model of a firearm only.
In this class you will learn:
- Basic firearms safety instruction
- Basic marksmanship instruction
- Safe firearm handling
- Firearm parts and operation
- The correct ammunition for your firearm
- How to clean and store your firearm
Attractive certificates are awarded to participants who successfully complete each class.
- FIRST STEPS Pistol: 4 hour orientation ($150/$125/$30).
During this course the student will spend around one hour on the range learning basic marksmanship employing the fundamentals of pistol shooting with their pistol firing approximately 100 rounds of ammunition.
- FIRST STEPS Rifle: 4 hour orientation ($150/$125/$30).
NOTE: This class is restricted to rimfire rifles.
During this course the student will spend around one hour on the range learning basic marksmanship employing the fundamentals of rifle shooting with their .22 caliber rifle firing approximately 100 rounds of ammunition.
- FIRST STEPS Shotgun: 4 hour orientation ($150/$125/$30).
NOTE: Restricted to smoothbore shotguns only and ammunition is limited to target loads with #7˝ or #8 shot.
During this course the student will spend around one hour on the range learning basic marksmanship employing the fundamentals of shotgun shooting with their shotgun firing approximately 75 rounds of ammunition.
NRA Advanced Courses
Class size is limited to 10 participants.
Attractive certificates are awarded to participants who successfully complete each course.
- Personal Protection in the Home: 8 hours ($125/$100).
This course teaches basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for the protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense.
Course covers defensive shooting; basic defensive handgun skills; firearms and the law -- possession, ownership, and the use of deadly force; strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation; selecting a handgun for self-defense and more.
Prerequisites: 21 years of age or older and consent of instructor.
Student must provide a centerfire handgun (.38 caliber / 9 MM or larger) in good working condition (we require that it pass a safety inspection) and a minimum 150 - 200 rounds of ammunition. Also a strong side holster, two or more magazines/speed loaders with holder would be beneficial.
- Range Safety Officer: 9 hours ($125/$100).
This course teaches basic Range Safety Officer duties. It includes a thorough introduction to the role of the Range Safety Officer, range Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), range safety briefings, range inspections and rules, emergency procedures and how to clear firearm stoppages and correct malfunctions.
Prerequisite: 21 years of age or older.
- Metallic Cartridge Reloading: 8 hours ($125/$100/$30).
This course teaches basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to safely reload metallic cartridges. Through this course, the student will learn basic reloading procedures; information about choosing powders, primers, and bullets; information about different types of reloading equipment; and their proper setup and operation.
NOTE: The course is designed to impart knowledge on the reloading process, not to give loads for specific cartridges.
- Shotgun Cartridge Reloading: 8 hours ($125/$100/$30).
This course teaches basic knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to safely reload shotgun shells. Through this course, the student will learn basic reloading procedures; information about choosing hulls, primers, powders, wads and shot or slugs; information about different types of reloading equipment; and their proper setup and operation.
NOTE: The course is designed to impart knowledge on the reloading process, not to give loads for specific cartridges.
Shooting Skill Improvement Courses

Class size is limited to 10 participants. Targets will be supplied. A firearm in good working condition (we require that it pass a safety inspection) and ammunition must be supplied by the student.
The following courses utilize the NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program to develop firearm handling and shooting skills in new shooters. The courses of fire are designed to take shooters from a beginning skill level through intermediate levels up to the nationally recognized skill level. By the time a shooter completes the Distinguished Expert rating, they will have attained a proficiency level paralleling that of a competitively classified Sharpshooter. The NRA provides national recognition for all NRA members who achieve the Distinguished Expert rating provided they have acquired the awards for all the lower ratings.
The student progresses through the progressive ratings at their own pace. Limited instruction and guidance is provided.
Note: The NRA rating awards are not provided as part of these courses, the student is responsible for the purchase of their individual rating awards from the NRA.
These courses have no classroom activity, all time is spent on the range. Remember to bring hearing and eye protection, clothing suitable for the season and a baseball type cap with a brim.
- Handgun Marksmanship Qualification Course: 6 hour sessions [two sessions] ($20 per session).
Prerequisites: NRA Basic Pistol course -or- substantial pistol shooting experience.
A .22 rimfire semi-automatic handgun is recommended with a minimum 600 - 1,000 rounds of ammunition.
- Light Rifle Benchrest Marksmanship Qualification Course: 6 hour sessions [two sessions] ($20 per session).
Prerequisites: NRA Basic Rifle course -or- substantial rifle shooting experience.
A .22 rimfire rifle weighing 8.5 pounds or less (including sights/scope) is required with a minimum 600 - 1,000 rounds of ammunition.
NRA Instructor Courses
As an Instructor, you will experience the personal satisfaction of teaching others the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will lead to a lifetime of safe, enjoyable and successful involvement in firearm and shooting activities. Instructors provide an invaluable service in their communities by training hundreds of individuals annually. As firearm and shooting activities expand, and more Americans choose to exercise their right to carry a firearm, so too grows the need for these courses and the Instructors to teach them.
The NRA is looking for new instructor candidates who enjoy working with people, want to share their firearm knowledge and skills with others, and are willing to make a commitment to teach NRA training courses.
To qualify as an NRA instructor, you must:
- Possess and demonstrate a solid background in firearm safety and shooting skills acquired through previous firearm training (such as completion of an NRA Basic Firearm Training Course) and/or previous shooting experience.
- Successfully complete the appropriate NRA instructor examination. Certified—90% or higher. Assistant—85% or higher. Apprentice—85% or higher.
- Satisfactorily complete an NRA Instructor Training Course for the area of specialization you wish to teach (e.g., NRA Basic Shotgun Course), and receive the endorsement of the NRA Training Counselor conducting your training.
- Submit your application with appropriate certification fee. Membership in the National Rifle Association is strongly recommended.

Class size is limited to 10 participants. For ages 13 years and older.
- Basic Instructor Training: 6 hours [two sessions: Friday 6pm - 10pm and Saturday 8am - 10am] ($20).
This course focuses on the development of the fundamental skills and attitude necessary to teach the basic courses. You will learn the various teaching methods and aids available to conduct a course.
- Pistol Instructor Training: 11 hours [two sessions: Saturday 10am - 6pm and Sunday 9am - 12pm] ($125/$100/$30).
This course develops NRA Certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Basic Pistol Course and the FIRST STEPS Pistol Course.
Prerequisites: NRA Basic Pistol course -or- substantial pistol shooting experience, -AND- NRA Basic Instructor Training course within preceding 12 months.
- Rifle Instructor Training: 14 hours [two sessions: Saturday 10am - 6pm and Sunday 12pm - 6pm] ($125/$100/$30).
This course develops NRA Certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Basic Rifle Course and the FIRST STEPS Rifle Course.
Prerequisites: NRA Basic Rifle course -or- substantial rifle shooting experience, -AND- NRA Basic Instructor Training course within preceding 12 months.
- Shotgun Instructor Training: 11 hours [two sessions: Saturday 10am - 6pm and Sunday 9am - 12pm] ($125/$100/$30).
This course develops NRA Certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Basic Shotgun Course and the FIRST STEPS Shotgun Course.
Prerequisites: NRA Basic Shotgun course -or- substantial shotgun shooting experience, -AND- NRA Basic Instructor Training course within preceding 12 months.
- Home Firearm Safety Instructor Training: 5 hours ($100/$75/$30).
This course develops NRA Certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Home Firearm Safety Course.
Prerequisites: NRA Home Firearm Safety course -or- substantial shooting experience, -AND- NRA Basic Instructor Training course within preceding 12 months.
- Personal Protection in the Home Instructor Training: 8 hours ($125/$100/$30).
This course develops NRA Certified Instructors who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to conduct the NRA Personal Protection in the Home Course.
Prerequisites: NRA Certified Pistol Instructor -AND- NRA Basic Instructor Training course within preceding 12 months.
