Welcome from the President

[Picture of David A. Lombardo] I was first introduced to shooting over 40 years ago compliments of the U.S. Army and I have been an active shooter and hunter ever since. For the past 20 years I have also been active in teaching shooting and hunting, and running various shooting organizations.

Over the years two things have been painfully obvious to me: The average age of the population of shooters and hunters has slowly risen and the number of non-traditional shooters and hunters has been dismally low.

I have been frequently told by women, children and ethnic minorities that they don’t feel welcome in the shooting sports. Some have told me they’ve been blatantly discriminated against at some clubs and in classes because of their age, ethnicity, gender or physical disability. And while in the past two years there has been somewhat of an increase in women hunters, overall the non-traditional population remains relatively small.

I am proud to be president of Howell Shooting Club, where SAFER USA holds it courses, because as a private shooting club the membership and board pro-actively encourage non-traditional shooters to join. Howell Shooting Club is a very family friendly organization. But a handful of such organizations aren’t enough which led me to create Second Amendment Foundation for Education & Research (SAFER USA).

SAFER USA is dedicated to providing a friendly, supportive place to learn about firearm safety, the shooting sports and personal protection. We highly encourage gender, age and ethnic diversity in our courses and our teaching staff.

SAFER USA is also handicapped friendly and we’ll do whatever we can to accommodate those with disabilities. Our host, Howell Shooting Club, is currently planning the installation of a wheelchair accessible ramp into the classroom and the ranges are already accessible. Come take our courses, perfect your skills and continue to train to become instructors so you can help us in our mission or duplicate our goals at your own shooting club.

Everyone associated with SAFER USA is a volunteer. Our goals go far beyond teaching NRA courses. We intend to become an IRS 501C3 non-profit educational organization, to publish an informative newsletter, offer academic scholarships, develop and teach advanced shooting skills classes and move into web-casting.

We are actively seeking individuals who want to help further our goals and would like to help in any of a wide array of volunteer jobs. Please feel free to contact me at any time for further information. Meanwhile, sign up for a course and discover the fun of the shooting sports.

Safe shooting!
